FAQ

Olive oil

What are the ingredients in olive oil?

Olive oil is a 100% natural product extracted from olives, the fruit of the olive tree. It contains only one ingredient: harvested olives.

What does the term extra virgin olive oil mean?

Extra virgin olive oil (or extra virgin) is the highest quality category of olive oil. It is obtained solely by mechanical means, without chemicals or refining, and must meet strict criteria for taste, acidity, and purity.
This is a regulated designation defined by international standards, notably those of the International Olive Council (IOC) and the European Union. The designation "extra virgin olive oil" is strictly regulated by:
- The European Union regulation (Regulation (EU) No. 1308/2013 and Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/2104)
- The International Olive Council (IOC), which establishes quality standards applicable in member countries
- National regulations, which may add specific requirements

For an oil to be sold under the name "extra virgin", it must meet specific criteria:
- Mechanical extraction only (no solvents or refining)
- Free acidity ≤ 0.8% (expressed as oleic acid)
- Absence of organoleptic defects (tested by sensory experts)
- Presence of fruity aromas (indicator of freshness and quality)
If these criteria are not met, the oil can be classified as "virgin olive oil" or refined oil (less qualitative).

Is olixir® olive oil certified organic?

Yes, our oil is 100% organic, certified by EU Regulation 2018/848 and Swiss Ordinance 910.18 on organic farming.

Does olixir® olive oil contain any additives or preservatives?

No! Olixir® is a pure extra virgin olive oil , without any additives , preservatives or pesticides.

Is olixir® filtered?

A filtered olive oil is an oil that has undergone a filtration process after extraction to remove impurities, solid residues (pieces of pulp, skin or pits) and water still present in the raw oil.
olixir® is filtered through cellulose panels to remove 100% of residue, which improves the stability of the oil over time.

What does cold pressing mean?

Cold pressing means that during the olive oil extraction process in the mills, the temperature is rigorously controlled at every stage and never exceeds 27°C. This method guarantees a high-quality oil, preserving its aromas and organoleptic properties.

What is the origin of olixir® extra virgin oil?

olixir® is a 100% Sicilian olive oil, made from olives from our olive grove and affiliated orchards that meet our quality standards. It is a blend of native Sicilian olive varieties selected for their quality, taste and nutritional benefits: Nocellara, Biancolilla, Cerasuola, Calamignara

Why is olixir® extra fresh?

Between the end of September and the beginning of October, the long-awaited time of the annual olive harvest arrives.
For olixir®, we choose to harvest the olives at an early stage, when they are still very green, in order to offer you an organic extra virgin olive oil, with a balanced green and fruity taste, and high in polyphenols, powerful cardioprotective antioxidants.
The harvest takes place over a month, and every day the olives are transported to the mill and cold pressed within a maximum of 12 hours after harvesting, thus preserving all the benefits of their freshness.
Since olives are harvested only once a year, we are committed to ensuring that the olixir® available is always as fresh as possible, from the latest harvest. Because whether for taste or health, olive oil is always better when it's fresh.
This practice allows you to enjoy olive oil of exceptional quality.

FAQ

Health

What are the health benefits of olive oil?

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has validated the results of a series of clinical studies linking polyphenols in extra virgin olive oil to cardiovascular health.
Polyphenols in olive oil have been shown to contribute to the protection of blood lipids against oxidative stress, a key factor in the development of cardiovascular diseases.
Olive oil must have a certain polyphenol content to have this beneficial impact and be consumed daily at a rate of 20g-30g, the equivalent of 2-3 tablespoons.

Olive oil is also rich in vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant that plays a key role in protecting our bodies from free radical damage. Vitamin E helps neutralize free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells, accelerate aging, and contribute to chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease.

What is the recommended olive oil consumption?

To benefit from the beneficial impact of olive oil on health, it must be consumed daily at a rate of 20g-30g, the equivalent of 2-3 tablespoons.

FAQ

Use

What is smoke point?

The smoke point is the temperature at which an oil or fat begins to break down and produce visible smoke. At this point, it alters its flavor.
The smoke point of extra virgin olive oil is around 190-210°C.

Can olixir® be used for cooking?

Olive oil is ideal for cooking almost anything thanks to its oxidative stability: rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, it resists oxidation and degradation better than other vegetable oils.
Extra virgin olive oil has a high smoke point: between 190°C and 210°C, which allows it to be used for most cooking purposes and is particularly suitable for:
- Cooking over low or medium heat (≤ 180°C): stir-fries, simmers, light grills
- Oven cooking: roasted vegetables, meats at low temperature
- Quick cooking: eggs, sautéed pasta

FAQ

Order & Delivery

How to store olixir®?

Olive oil oxidation is accelerated by three main factors: oxygen, temperature, and light. It is therefore essential to store it away from heat and light. Ideal storage conditions are a cool, dark place. Once opened, it is recommended to consume olive oil as soon as possible to preserve its quality and limit oxidation.

If you have purchased a Home System, don't worry, Bag-in-Box® packaging is the best packaging to preserve the health-promoting nutrients of olixir® which remain intact for longer: vacuum packaging / light-resistant / heat-resistant.

How long can I keep olixir®?

Olive oil has a best-before date, not an expiration date. The best-before date indicates that the product no longer offers all of its qualities.
Our mission is to provide you with the freshest olive oil possible from the latest harvest, so we recommend consuming olixir® within a year until the new harvest is available to always enjoy the benefits of the freshest oil possible.
