The European Food Safety Authority has validated the results of a multicenter, randomized, in vivo trial led by DR. Covas (head of the Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition Research Group at the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona, Spain) proving that only extra virgin olive oils with a concentration of antioxidants (biophenols) > 200mg/kg contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 20g of extra virgin olive oil.
In 2012, EFSA’s validation has been translated into law with EU Regulation N. 432/2012 and ratified in Switzerland in 2016 with law OIDAI (16/12/19) DFI.
